The Price of Running Away Was the Emperor’s Obsession

Irein joined the war under the name “Esi Ahil” in order to take revenge. After saving Emperor Killian and becoming a war hero, she proposed an endless game of hide-and-seek to escape from him. “Starting at midnight, please try to find me. If Your Majesty succeeds in finding me, then I will do whatever you desire.” Killian never intended to let Esi go, so her proposal was an opportunity for him as well. “I accept your proposal. Go ahead and run.” And then, from midnight onward—just ten minutes after Esi disappeared—no one ever saw her again. Four years later, Irein encounters Killian once more as the Marchioness of Chaint. “I’ve never failed to obtain what I wanted.” Killian reached toward the sleeve of Irein’s clothing. On the pure white fabric was a bloodstain, likely left when she had wiped his face moments earlier. “Whether it’s the imperial throne or a person… I’m the kind of man who will do whatever it takes to possess what I desire.” As he rubbed the bloodstain with his thumb, the crimson smear only spread wider. “If I wished to keep you by my side until the day you die… would you finally be afraid?” A single red stain gradually spread across the white sleeve. The traces left behind by the man with crimson hair and crimson eyes stained everything red.
