A man reads a famous philosophical quote about the starry heavens and moral law, but instead of awe, he feels anger. In his mind, the stars are blinding and corrupt those they shine upon. He abandons his dream of becoming a naval officer and becomes a pool doorkeeper, lost in a grand and spectacular age. Armed with strange knowledge from an unknown power, he steps into a world that is both boring and fascinating, questioning his path and purpose.
