A phoenix leads thousands of birds over an ancient capital, as a golden roc watches over the bustling city. A wounded young nobleman, radiating brilliant light, approaches a mysterious figure. He speaks of life and death, his light dispelling darkness. Memories flash: a pleasure quarter, a department's parasol trees, desert storms, a singer's voice, friends gathering leaves, a poet's brush. The light covers a battlefield of corpses and blood. The story follows a man cursed with bad luck and another who drains the luck of those around him, set against a backdrop of dynastic rise and fall.
