The Princess Was Left Alone”

by Kim Do-hee

The kingdom of Titen—a nation no empire had managed to conquer for hundreds of years. Prince Hippolytus, driven by his ambition to become emperor, decides to personally cross Titen’s impregnable walls in order to uncover the kingdom’s weakness. “Meeting that woman wasn’t fate. It was luck I created myself.” At the end of that journey, he encounters Ezra, the mysterious fourth princess. Even dressed in rags, Hippolytus is convinced she is hiding some kind of secret, and he begins putting on an act to win her favor— An act meant solely to use her, and deceive her. A fated meeting. A deliberate approach. Kindness that felt like salvation, and sweet words like destiny. At the end of that performance, which had seemed like a blessing from the gods, the woman who had outlived her usefulness leaps from the tower— And only then does he realize he would desperately try to catch her. Locked away in a tower her entire life, the hand he offered felt like salvation. Even if it had all been an act to manipulate me, I loved him enough to destroy my kingdom, kill my own family, and abandon everything. Because to me, love was everything. If I had known I would end up alone once again, would anything have changed? And when every last trace of love had finally withered away— “Love me.” The man who had once been my sun commanded her. “Love me again, like you used to.” With an expression that looked as though he might collapse to his knees at any moment.
